Madrone Bench
Madrone is one of the most beautiful trees in the Pacific Northwest — and one of the least used in woodworking, because it warps. This slab came from a massive tree on the Olympic Peninsula; the mill cured it for over three years. I held onto it longer and watched it at each step. It didn't move. The colors come out when you finish it — that warm orange, the dark streaks along the live edge. I welded the base from 1" steel tube and painted it matte black to stay out of the wood's way. Madrone is a tree you want to touch. That's still true of the bench.
